Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
Converting diesel powered engines over to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has a positive impact on air quality and reduces vehicle emissions. Much of Santa Cruz Metro’s bus fleet now operates on CNG as do a number of the fleet vehicles in operation at UCSC. Large fleets who rely on a steady supply of fuel typically operate their own on-site CNG fueling stations.
Where can I buy CNG?
A public CNG fueling center is available at the PG&E Service Center at 615 7th Ave., Santa Cruz.
Biodiesel
Biodiesel is a clean-burning fuel made from renewable resources such as recycled cooking oil, soybean oil, and animal fats. Most existing diesel engines can use biodiesel without being modified typically in blends of up to 5 percent or 20 percent biodiesel. Biodiesel is good for the environment and helps reduce dependence on oil.
