SANTA CRUZ – The Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf has been temporarily closed as of Sunday, January 24, 2016, due to a burst water main under the Wharf. City Fire and Water crews arrived on the scene this morning to find a significant break in the water main that provides water to Wharf businesses. Extreme surf conditions and the length and severity of the break prevent the immediate repair of the water main. City staff are working expeditiously to restore temporary domestic water service, until permanent repairs can be made. The Wharf will remain closed until further notice.
The water main, which provides drinking and fire safety water to all Wharf businesses and facilities, broke around 9:00 a.m. this morning. At this time, staff is uncertain as to the cause of the break, but high surf may have played a role.
The City will reopen the Wharf once temporary water service is restored, and only after testing determines water quality meets safe drinking levels. City officials expect that the permanent fix will occur later this week, depending upon surf conditions.
The City apologizes for any inconveniences this closure may cause residents, businesses and visitors.
