SANTA CRUZ – A short section of West Cliff Drive will be closed intermittently for the coming week as the city works to repair an eroded cliff after a recent storm swell battered the area.
The West Cliff section between Woodrow Avenue and David Way will be closed to traffic Friday, through Feb. 6, opening to one-lane during construction breaks.
The West Cliff Drive bluff face, about 370 feet west of the intersection with Woodrow Avenue, has faced swells of up to 20 feet in recent weeks, accelerating erosion, according to Santa Cruz Public Works spokeswoman Janice Bisgaard.
The sidewalk nearest the eroded cliff has been marked with cones and taped off. The area has taken a beating stretching back six weeks, but has been an area of concern for a longer time, Bisgaard said.
“As the situation worsened in recent weeks, plans were expedited to place large boulders — rip rap — on the rock shelf to arm the face of the bluff against wave action,” Bisgaard said.
