
Hwy 236 Repaving project and full closure limits – map pm 9.15 – pm 17.0
A three month, 17-mile resurfacing project will take place on Highway 236 near Boulder Creek between Pine Street and Old Mill Road beginning Monday, Sept. 12 with one-way, reversing traffic control, followed by a three-week, full closure next Monday, Sept. 19. Updated info as of 10/4 shown in red and is as follows:
From lower Hwy. 9/Hwy. 236 to near the State Park HQ (Post Mile 0.1-9.15)
- One-way reversing traffic control Monday-Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm and Friday from 8 am to 1 pm
Work on curb ramps on Saturday, Oct. 1 on near Redwood Ave in the town of Boulder Creek
From near State Park HQ to upper Hwy. 9/Hwy. 236 (Post Mile 9.15-17.0)
One-way reversing traffic control Monday-Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm and Friday from 8 am to 1 pm next week, from Sept. 12 to Sept. 16.
- Three week FULL closure with entry for residents restricted depending on location of work. (Contractor will work with residents to provide reasonable access when possible).
- As of Friday 9/23 at 10:30am, most residents now have access via northern Hwy 236.
- As of Tuesday 9/27, all residents now have access via northern Hwy 236 and paving is complete to south of China Grade.
- Paving is complete on the upper Hwy 236 section. One-way reversing traffic control Monday-Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm and Friday from 8 am to 1 pm all along Hwy 236 can be expected for the remainder of guardrail, striping, and shoulder backing work

Friday Sept. 23 through Saturday, Oct. 1:
Paving continues from just north of Waterman Gap Loop (Post Mile 15.55) to near the State Park Headquarters (Post Mile 9.15), working south. Caltrans anticipates ½-mile per shift to be paved.As of Friday 9/23 at 10:30 AM, Paving has been completed to Post Mile 15.45 (south of Waterman Gap) residents can proceed north on Hwy. 236 to exit.Longer shifts will begin on Monday, Sept. 26 from 6 am to 6 pm and continue through Saturday, Oct. 1 (7am to 4pm).
Wednesday, Sept. 28 through Friday, Oct. 7:
- Paving continues from China Grade Rd. (Post Mile 12.8) to near the State Park HQ (Post Mile 9.15), working south. We expect ½- to ¾ mile per shift to be paved.
- Longer shifts began on Monday, Sept. 26 and continue from 6 am to 6 pm weekdays through Friday, Oct. 7.
NOTE: Motorists can expect 30-minute delays for reversing traffic control. Potentially, 30+ minutes for detoured traffic due to full closure. The southern entrance to Big Basin State Park will remain open to visitors during full closure. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
The purpose of this project is to resurface the existing roadway with hot mix asphalt to extend the life of the highway.
NOTE: Motorists can expect 15-minute delays for reversing traffic control. Potentially, 30+ minutes for detoured traffic due to full closure. The southern entrance to Big Basin State Park will remain open to visitors during full closure.
The contractor for this $3.4 million construction project, which is scheduled to complete in December, is Graniterock Company of Watsonville, CA.
